Diyes International – Tetanus is a disease caused by an infection with the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which can affect the nervous system. It can cause extremely painful muscle contractions. This disease can be dangerous and even fatal, but proper vaccination prevents it.
Tetanus is a serious infection that the Clostridium tetani bacteria cause. These bacteria typically live in soil, dust, or animal feces. When they enter the body through an open wound, they produce toxins that attack the nervous system. These toxins trigger uncontrollable muscle contractions, particularly in the face and neck muscles. In severe cases, they interfere with breathing.
The symptoms usually appear within 3 to 21 days after the bacteria enter the body through a wound. Watch for these common symptoms:
Tetanus does not spread from person to person. The disease spreads when open wounds become contaminated with soil, dust, or feces containing Clostridium tetani bacteria. Puncture wounds, burns, animal bites, or accident-related injuries often serve as entry points for the bacteria.
Vaccination effectively prevents this disease. Healthcare providers combine the tetanus vaccine with other vaccines, such as diphtheria and pertussis vaccines, into a single injection known as the DTP vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis). Vaccination provides long-term protection against tetanus, especially for infants, children, and adults who have not received a tetanus shot before.
Doctors typically administer the vaccine at 2, 4, 6, and 18 months of age. They recommend a booster shot every 10 years for adults. Routine and timely vaccination prevents tetanus infections.
Doctors must treat this disease immediately after diagnosing it. Treatment involves administering antibiotics to kill the bacteria and tetanus immunoglobulin to neutralize the toxins already in the body. In addition, intensive care, such as respiratory support or sedative medications, might be necessary depending on the severity of the symptoms.
